What is sales ethics in business? Business ethics is a form of applied ethics or professional ethics that examines ethical principles and moral or ethical problems that arise in a business environment. It applies to all aspects of business conduct and is relevant to the conduct of individuals and entire organizations.

Every business owner has to have some sort of business ethics to be successful in sales. Where do you draw the line? Will you do anything for a sale? Ethical issues surface in most all stages of the selling process. How can the business owner go about choosing an ethical approach to sales?

Here are some ideas:

1. Integrity. Integrity is something that is performed (action) and not just jargon (talk). Integrity is shown from a proven track record of successes as well as honesty and willingness to care about your clients and fulfill their needs. True professionalism is shown by the sales person’s creditability.

2. Trust. Trust is something that is earned and not taken lightly. Trust is part of a long term business relationship that grows over time. Always fulfill promises and commitments to clients. If you state your intentions, make sure you make a point to follow-through. There is nothing worse than a referral that says “That company does not return voicemails or show up for scheduled meetings”. Trust is very personal and something that will follow-you throughout your sales career.

3. Standards. Set your business standards high. Remember when you are the customer; How do you want to be treated and how do you feel about white lies? Discuss common situations with your sales team. Don’t wait until a situation arises to decide the best way to handle.

When doing business on behalf of a company, you are the sole representative of that company. If a sales team member does not have the best business ethics, you as the business owner may want to rethink them representing your company and company name.

Business reputation and the integrity of your company is more than just a dollar sign.
